Get ready … it’s coming … Health Coaching … aka Lifestyle Medicine …

The strains on BC’s, and other health care systems in Canada and elsewhere, is only going to get worse … so it’s time to get ready to take care of yourself … before you have to lean on a system that is “on the verge of collapse” and might not be able to do that for you …

The need for transformational health care, in which healthy behaviours are adopted and incorporated into daily life, is increasing exponentially.

Since the onset of Covid in late 2019, the population of British Columbia has increased markedly, and will continue to do so.

With many health-care workers working to the point of mental and physical burnout, hospital union surveys (there were many done in 2021 and 2022) reveal that more than 1 in 3 health-care workers may quit their jobs in the next two years, and almost 1 in 2 doctors are considering reducing their clinical work.

The hundreds of clinical trials done in the US since 2019, in which health coaching was featured as central to care plans, make it inevitable that Health Coaching, like other preventive medical fields, will continue to become more mainstream.

As the strains on BC’s Health System increase, it’s only a matter of time before discussions are tabled about whether the costs associated with employing a health coach should be covered by extended health benefits.

Until that time, however, like other “private health care options”, people will have to decide whether or not it is something they can afford.

Given that your health should be considered as more than an investment, instead of a cost, and that most people who might balk at doing something to improve their health in the long term wouldn’t hesitate in replacing their broken iPhone the next day, the decision shouldn’t be a difficult one.

For insights about where the transforming BC Health Care System is headed, looking at the US system is helpful because of the hundreds of clinical trials done since 2019 that featured health coaching as central to care plans.

Interpretation of the results of these clinical trials is provided by Daniel Croymans, the Medical Director of Quality and Primary Care Physician at UCLA Health:

For some patients with chronic diseases, certain complex chronic diseases or advanced chronic diseases, absolutely there are medications that make a huge difference on health and quality of life. But there’s still a large patient population with early lifestyle-related chronic diseases. And what do we really have available? Sometimes it is medication, but for many of these patients, preventing and even reversing disease progression is simply a matter of changing the choices they make on a daily basis. So we wanted to experiment with integrating Health Coaching and wearable devices into our traditional primary care workflows.”

The BC Health Care System is attempting to transform from one that is episodic and siloed, into one that is unified and integrated with the various other fields of medicine.

This is precisely what Health Coaching offers, as the empowered patients communicate their needs, are highly involved in the decision-making process and learn how to optimally take care of their health in their day-to-day environment.
