A quarter of adults are physically inactive, getting no exercise whatsoever.
(personal note –> with >65% of adults obese or overweight, >30% at risk of, or with diabetes and ~88% metabolically unhealthy, I’ll bet the real number is higher than that).
According to studies done at Harvard University, feeding this inactivity trend amongst older adults is a common exercise myth:
It’s typical, almost inevitable, that you’ll be less physically active as you grow older.
That couldn’t be more dangerously wrong.
Historically, hunter-gatherers lived lives of repeated walking, running, bending, lifting, and carrying … and that didn’t degrade their muscles.
In fact, the exercise maintained them, allowing them to avoid the frailty that plagues adults in Western societies.
Modern medicine, safer environments, and far better nutrition today do keep people alive much longer today, however the fact is that we soften to death over time, with our internal “irrigation system” of veins and arteries slowly losing the vital functionality required to keep us resilient, energetic and healthy during the last third of our lives.
Exercise can seem like a chore, but it pays off in saved time and money.
According to the CDC, 4 of the 5 most costly chronic conditions among adults aged 50 or older:
(1) arthritis (2) stroke (3) heart disease, and (4) diabetes
can be prevented or managed through physical activity.
Working out is vastly preferable to a doctor’s visit, and far cheaper … and it doesn’t have to take more than 1-2% of your day (compared to the ~24%, or 6 hours, the average adult spends online each day!!!)
